Are you looking to move from the military into financial services but unsure how to make the transition?
Deep learning courses are the way to transition from forces to finance.

A career in financial services can be exciting, challenging and highly rewarding - and there is lots of interest in hiring ex-forces people into finance roles due to the many skills they bring.

Financial services is a hugely important sector employing over 1 million people in the UK (3.0% of all jobs), according to a 2022 Parliamentary report. Last year, it contributed £174 billion to the economy - 8.3% of total economic output.

I have been lucky enough to join an ex-forces scheme with a tier 1 investment bank. The programme aims to use ex-forces people’s skills, and challenge the status quo by looking at problems though a different lens compared to a banking graduate.

I now deal with digital and crypto assets, enabling tokenisation, digital custody, and distributed ledger technology blockchain. It’s a challenging and exhilarating role that draws many parallels with my former career in the army.
Train-up for your transition
People often ask me which skills have proved most beneficial in my transition from the army to financial services; what courses to take, and how to best position yourself for the most demanding financial roles.

Leaving the forces is a daunting process. The civilian employment market can be incredibly intimidating. But you must look to the end goal and believe in your abilities. This will push you outside your comfort zone, and I have had to embrace being comfortable with being uncomfortable.

There are ways to mitigate the uncertainty and make the process easier. These include attending the many ex-forces insight days hosted by financial firms, and carefully considering which industry-recognised courses are the most beneficial.

Recognised training includes the London Banking Academy (LBA) Foundation and Practitioner courses. The LBA creates high-quality, deep-learning programmes led by respected industry professionals who are leaders in their fields.

LBA aims to increase and diversify the talent pipeline into banking. It creates opportunities for individuals with no prior knowledge or experience of Capital Markets to secure a successful career and excel in banking through its self-led, e-learning Foundation Course. Those with prior knowledge can deepen their understanding with the classroom-led Practitioner Course.

LBA Foundation and Practitioner courses are game-changers in enabling ex-forces people to equip themselves with deep industry knowledge as they transition into a financial services career.
